Park Overview

About The Mgahinga National Park

Located in south-western Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies within the wider Virunga Conservation Area, which includes Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Republic of Congo, it evolved from a game reserve to a national park over an entire habitat in 1991. The main impetus for this development was the protection of mountain gorilla populations, through which frequent conflicts occurred with local communities, both inside and outside the park boundaries.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to your questions before joining a tour so that you can find out exactly what you want to know.
1. What happens during gorilla trekking in Mgahinga?
The experience begins with a ranger briefing covering safety, conservation and responsible gorilla-viewing guidelines. Visitors then follow experienced guides through the forest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla group. The duration and difficulty of the trek depend on the gorillas’ location, weather and trail conditions. Once the gorillas are found, visitors observe them while following the instructions given by the ranger team. Mgahinga protects mountain gorillas within the Virunga landscape shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A golden monkey Mgahinga trekking experience takes visitors into the park’s bamboo-covered slopes to search for these active and colourful primates. Guided groups follow their calls and movements while learning about their behaviour, habitat and conservation.
Mgahinga is the only national park in Uganda where golden monkey trekking occurs, making the activity a distinctive addition to a gorilla trekking itinerary.

The Mgahinga volcano hike on Mount Sabinyo is a demanding mountain adventure involving steep terrain, changing weather and high elevation. Travellers should have good physical fitness and prepare for muddy, uneven or slippery trails. Mount Sabyinyo is the official and more widely used spelling of the volcano’s name. Appropriate hiking boots, layered clothing, rain protection, sufficient drinking water and a small daypack are recommended.
4. What other activities can I enjoy in Mgahinga National Park?

In addition to gorilla and golden monkey trekking, visitors can enjoy guided volcano hikes, forest walks and birdwatching. The park is an important location for Albertine Rift endemic birds and other montane forest species.
Travellers can also join a Batwa-led cultural experience to learn about traditional forest knowledge, livelihoods and the community’s historic relationship with the surrounding landscape.

A two- or three-day visit works well for travellers focusing on one main primate activity and a cultural or nature experience. Visitors hoping to combine gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking and a volcano hike should allow additional time so the itinerary does not feel rushed. Mgahinga can also be included in a longer southwestern Uganda safari with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Lake Bunyonyi or other attractions around Kisoro.
