Walk Above the Rainforest on the Treetop Walk in Nyungwe
Challenge your sense of adventure on the remarkable treetop walk in Nyungwe, a 160-metre suspension bridge rising approximately 70 metres above a forested ravine. Often considered one of Africa’s most spectacular canopy experiences, the walk offers a unique perspective over Rwanda’s largest remaining montane rainforest. Combine the elevated walkway with the Igishigishigi forest trail for an exciting journey filled with beautiful scenery, birdlife and opportunities to appreciate Nyungwe’s extraordinary biodiversity.
What to Expect on the Nyungwe Canopy Walk
The Nyungwe canopy walk begins at Uwinka Park Reception with registration and a safety briefing before you set off with your guide. The experience takes around two hours and combines a forest trail with a walk across a suspension bridge of approximately 70 metres above the rainforest floor.
As you cross the canopy walkway, you can enjoy panoramic views of Nyungwe’s evergreen forest, surrounding mountains and distant Lake Kivu. Keep an eye out for colourful birds, butterflies and possible primate sightings among the trees. The trail can be damp or slippery, so comfortable hiking shoes and rain protection gear are recommended.
Best Time to Visit Nyungwe for the Canopy Walk
The Nyungwe canopy walk can be enjoyed throughout the year, but weather conditions can influence the experience. Rain is possible even during generally drier periods, and wet weather can make forest trails slippery.
For a more comfortable experience, come prepared with waterproof clothing and suitable hiking shoes regardless of the season. The changing weather is also part of the rainforest experience, while clear periods can provide better visibility across the forest canopy, mountains and distant Lake Kivu.
