The package includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a Dian Fossey hiking permit, private transport, fuel, a driver-guide, lunch, bottled water and local handling charges. Personal expenses, insurance, tips and unlisted meals or drinks are excluded.

The tour includes a drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, registration and a ranger briefing before hiking to the former Karisoke Research Center. Visitors see Dian Fossey’s grave, learn about her life and gorilla research, then return for lunch and the drive to Kigali.

The hike requires reasonable fitness due to high altitude, steep sections and muddy or slippery trails. Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and a rain jacket are recommended, while hiring a porter can provide extra support.

Mountain gorilla sightings are not included or guaranteed. The tour uses a Dian Fossey hiking permit, so travellers who want to visit a habituated gorilla family must book a separate gorilla-trekking experience.

Dian Fossey established the Karisoke Research Center in 1967 to study and protect mountain gorillas. Its long-running research has contributed greatly to gorilla conservation, scientific knowledge and the training of conservationists.

The price of the Dian Fossey Tomb hike permit depends on the visitor’s residency status. For foreign non-residents, the permit costs US$75 per person and includes park entry, a ranger guide, and a pre-hike briefing by experienced personnel at the Volcanoes National Park office.
