Rosamond “Roz” Carr established Imbabazi in December 1994 at the age of 82 to care for children who had been lost or orphaned following the genocide. Roz and her staff cared for more than 400 children over the years. Many were later reunited with relatives or moved into independent adulthood.

No. Imbabazi no longer accepts children as residential occupants. Its present mission focuses on preserving Roz Carr’s legacy while supporting children and surrounding communities through education, vocational skills and income-generating opportunities. Visitors should therefore describe it as a historic orphanage site and current community organisation rather than an active orphanage.
