Akagera National Park is one of the top choices for a brief excursion to observe a large number of bird species in Rwanda. The park’s game tracks provide birders with ample opportunities to view a variety of birds and wildlife during the morning and evening hours. Akagera National Park is renowned for its diverse array of water birds and distinctive papyrus endemics. Some of the bird species that visitors can expect to see during their safari include: the stunning Lilac-Breasted Roller, the Crested Barbet, Black Headed Gonolek, Ross’s Turaco, Heuglin’s Robin-Chat, and the Grey Hornbill, among others.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Transfer to Akagera National Park & birding on Lake Ihema

Our company offers a 3-day birding safari that takes you to some of the best birding spots in the park. The safari includes a meet and greet with our company representative and birding guide, a 2-hour drive from Kigali to the park, a check-in to your lodge, lunch, a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, a guided hike through the park, dinner, and a briefing on the next day's activities. The safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will give you the opportunity to see some of the most beautiful and rare birds in the world.Accommodation: Akagera Game Lodge (Mid-range)

Day 2 : Full day birding Akagera National Park

Rise early and go on a day-long birdwatching tour to Akagera National Park. The park is home to an impressive 525 bird species, including 44 types of raptors, such as the shoebill stork (balaeniceps rex), as well as various migratory birds, like the common snipe (gallinago media), the northern lapwing (glareola nordmanni), and the lesser kestrel (falco naumanni). Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to spot many other bird species while in Akagera National Park, such as the ring-necked francolin, the pallid harrier, the green-throated sunbird, the madagascar pond-heron, the red-faced barbet, the black-shouldered nightjar, etc. Besides bird watching, you'll also have the chance to see various wildlife species, including giraffes, lions, topis, elephants, cape buffaloes, black rhinos, impalas, and elands.

Day 3: Morning birding trip & transfer to Kigali

After having breakfast early in the morning, head to the park to try and spot any species that you might not have seen in the previous days. Later, return to the lodge to check out and then proceed to Kigali International Airport, ending your 3-day birding experience at Akagera National Park in Rwanda with unforgettable memories.
